5. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
Expected Release date: 17th December
For the Lord Of The Ring fans this is third and last instalment in this trilogy of epic fantasy adventure film, directed by Peter Jackson. In this movie the Company of Thorin has reached Smaug’s lair; but can Bilbo and the Dwarves reclaim Erebor and the treasure? And, if so, can they hold on to it?
Why It Matters: With the last movie of the hobbit series, this will surely be the movie to look out for this coming winter.
4. The Expendables 3
Expected release date: 15th August
Continuing with the franchise, The Expendables 3 is about the Expendables needing to save the President of the United States. While on their mission, they clash with several younger, technology oriented action heroes. In this movie, Barney (Sylvester Stallone), Christmas (Jason Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill or so he thought.
Why It Matters: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenagger, Antonio Banderas and Mel Gibson in one movie? Come on!
3. Exodus
Expected release date : 12th December
Director Ridley Scott got his wish when Christian Bale signed on to play Moses in this adaptation of the book of Exodus, the Bible story in which Moses leads the enslaved Israelites out of Egypt and into to the promised land. Not only are Bible stories a hot topic in 2014 (as evidenced by Noah), but the Moses story in particular is getting attention.
Why it matters: Um, who doesn’t want to see Batman part the Red Sea on the big screen? The film, also stars Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul and reportedly cast 4,000 extras from the Spanish region where filming took place.
2. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1
Expected release date: 21st November.
The final book in the The Hunger Games trilogy is going the way of Harry Potter and Twilight and hitting theatres in two parts, the first closing out 2014 and the latter arriving in 2015. Director Francis Lawrence, is sticking around for both instalments, which find Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) leading a rebellion against the government behind the series’ titular death match.
Why it matters: With the success of the Catching Fire, this seems to be the first successful female driven superhero movie franchise to make it so big in the Hollywood box office.
1. Interstellar
Expected release date: 7th November
If Gravity didn’t scare you off from movies about the dangers of space, Christopher Nolan’s galaxy-traversing. Interstellar might do the trick. Nolan is saying little about the script he wrote with his brother Jonathan—but we do know Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway play explorers who travel to other dimensions after discovering a previously unknown wormhole.
Why It Matters: After the success of The Dark Knight trilogy, people are awaiting anxiously to see the chemistry of the Nolan- McConaughey-Hathaway trio.
